Unlocking the power of individual donors in fundraising
When it comes to building sustainable income streams for charities, non-profits, and cultural organisations, individual donors are often the cornerstone of successful fundraising strategies. But what exactly is an individual donor in fundraising terms, and how can you engage with them effectively to support your mission?
Who is an individual donor?
• Regular donors: People who set up recurring donations, providing a reliable income stream.
• One-off donors: Supporters who give in response to specific appeals, events, or campaigns.
• Major donors: High-net-worth individuals who make significant contributions, often with a more personalised approach to engagement.
• Members: Individuals who join membership schemes in exchange for benefits, creating both financial support and a deeper connection to your cause.
• Legacy donors: supporters who leave gifts in their wills, securing long-term funding for your organisation.
The value of individual donors
Individual donors offer more than just financial contributions. They become advocates, volunteers, and loyal supporters who are emotionally invested in your organisation’s success. Cultivating strong relationships with them helps to create a community that can grow over time, leading to increased support, both financially and through word-of-mouth advocacy.

Our track record
We’ve supported a wide range of organisations in developing successful individual giving programmes. From helping cultural institutions grow their membership schemes to guiding charities through major donor campaigns, our consultants bring both expertise and creativity to every project.
• We worked with international development charity, Christian Aid we developed their first in-house street fundraising programme and tested it at the Greenbelt Festival, which is a Christian Festival in Gloucester. The team was drawn from Christian Aid staff volunteers and we devised and agreed a training programme, then took the team through a series of practice sessions and give them support through the three days of the festival raising over £10,000 in direct debits in that period. We went on to assist over a three year period.
• We helped the Howard League, the UK's oldest penal reform charity, to develop a door-to-door programme, using newly recruited staff members. We managed an in-house training programme: first working through the basics of door to door fundraising, then trial practice sessions and finally working on the street and learning by engaging with the public in selected London streets. This programme was intended to build a body of support to change society and the government's views on penal reform.
