Stakeholder engagement with National Spitfire Project

December 8, 2024

Chief of the Air Staff, Sir Rich Knighton, recently hosted a distinguished reception at the Ministry of Defence to recognize friends and supporters of the National Spitfire Project (NSP).

We are proud to be providing strategic and practical fundraising support and management to the National Spitfire Project (NSP), the organisation behind the drive to build a new, national monument commemorating the iconic Spitfire aircraft. As part of our work with NSP, we have been involved in the organisation of an exclusive stakeholder event at MOD HQ. The historically significant venue highlighted the goals and enduring themes of the project, which will bring a world-class monument to life in Southampton, commemorating the remarkable legacy of the Spitfire.

The National Spitfire Project’s objectives were showcased at the reception: to Commemorate all who designed, built, operated, and supported this legendary aircraft; to Celebrate British engineering innovation; and to Inspire future generations through STEM and history education. The future monument, designed by renowned architect Nick Hancock, will serve as a symbol of Britain’s resilience and ingenuity, as well as a testament to those who contributed to the Spitfire’s remarkable story.

The reception welcomed prominent guests, including ambassadors, Members of Parliament, captains of industry, philanthropists, academics, and experts from fields spanning material supply and construction—many of whom have already committed resources or expertise to bring this project to fruition. Each attendee received a copy of Spitfire Evolution by NSP Trustee and renowned historian, Paul Beaver, a comprehensive volume that chronicles the Spitfire’s development and adaptability.

Special highlights of the evening included a display by Alastair Gibson of Carbon Art 45, who presented a large-scale carbon-fibre Spitfire crafted in support of the project. Dale Luckhurst, from project partner Airfix, delighted attendees by sharing Spitfire model kits with select guests.

Speaking at the event, NSP Chair, John Hannides said: “The event at the Ministry of Defence served as a reminder of the Spitfire’s enduring legacy and the unyielding support for this monumental project. The National Spitfire Project is set to inspire countless visitors and future generations, celebrating not only a storied aircraft but the spirit of innovation, dedication, and courage it represents.”

The monument itself, a stainless-steel Spitfire designed to a one-and-a-half scale, will soar 40 metres above the River Test, supported by a sculpted vapor trail. Set to be located in Southampton—the Spitfire’s birthplace—the monument will feature a gentle ramp for accessibility, seating, a reflection pool, and roundels representing the 30 nations that operated the Spitfire. This new landmark promises to offer both a place of reflection and inspiration to visitors as they take in the sights along the River Test.

The total cost of the project is £6 million. The government has committed £3 million in match funding, and Southampton City Council is set to contribute a further £350,000 towards the construction of the project.
